Background
Surgical procedures are often the result of traditions and personal preferences. They are not necessarily based on randomized comparative and prospective studies. As much as tradition is of benefit in cultural life, it may prevent innovative thinking in the field of surgery.
We believe that no single step of a surgical operation should be regarded as a taboo. Every step should have a defined purpose and a precise way of performance. All steps, as well as their combinations and sequences, should be re-evaluated and examined in the light of new understandings of pathology and physiology.
